How to ask for a refund on a student access purchase, what a refund does to your access, and what happens if you dispute a charge with your bank instead.
Effective · Adapt Learning, LLC
This Refund & Cancellation Policy forms part of the Terms of Service & EULA between you and Adapt Learning, LLC. Where this Policy and Section 8 of the Terms describe the same thing, they are intended to say the same thing; this Policy is the fuller statement.
This Policy applies to student access purchases — the one-time payments students make on the web to unlock the courses their institution assigns them.
It does not apply to anything else, because nothing else costs money:
A student access purchase is a single, one-time payment for a fixed period of access. It is not a subscription. It does not renew, it creates no recurring charge, and no card is stored for future billing.
So there is no cancellation step, and no deadline to cancel before. When the period you bought ends, access simply ends. If you want to continue after that, you buy again — at whatever the price is then.
(a) How to ask. Email support@adaptlearning.io from the address on your account and tell us what happened. You do not need a form, a reason code, or a receipt number, though the receipt Stripe emailed you helps us find the payment faster. We aim to respond within five business days.
(b) We do not operate a fixed refund window. We are a small company and we would rather look at what actually happened than apply a rule that fits some situations and not others. Requests are decided case by case. We are especially likely to refund where you bought the wrong thing, bought twice, bought access you turned out not to need because your institution had already provided it, or where the product did not work.
(c) What a full refund does. If we refund your purchase in full, the access that purchase paid for ends. You cannot keep the access and the money.
(d) What a partial refund does. A partial refund does not end your access — your access period continues unchanged. This is deliberate: it is what lets us make a goodwill adjustment without taking away something you are still using.
(e) Where the money goes.Refunds are returned to the original payment method through Stripe. How quickly it appears is your bank’s decision, not ours; five to ten business days is typical. Any tax collected is refunded in the same proportion as the payment.
Please email us before you call your bank. A dispute takes your bank somewhere between sixty and seventy-five days to resolve and it costs us a fee whatever the outcome. Almost every dispute we could receive is something we would simply have refunded.
(a) What happens when you dispute. When we receive notice of a dispute from Stripe, your access ends immediately — the money has already left our account at that point, and it stays out for as long as the dispute runs.
(b) If the dispute is resolved in our favour. The funds return to us, and we restore the access that purchase paid for. You do not need to contact us for this to happen and you are not charged again. If your original access period would have ended while the dispute was running, contact us and we will sort it out.
(c) If the dispute is resolved in your favour. You keep the money and the access stays off, which is the same outcome as a full refund under Section 3(c).
(d) A dispute outranks a refund. If a purchase has been disputed, we will not also refund it — that would pay you twice for the same charge. If you have asked us for a refund and then disputed the same charge, tell us, so that we can stop one of the two.
Adapt is delivered over the internet and we do not promise uninterrupted availability — see Section 10 of the Terms. Short outages are not by themselves a refund event. A failure that meaningfully deprives you of the access you paid for is, and Section 3 is how you raise it.
One thing worth stating plainly, because it is the likeliest way a purchase disappoints somebody: what you see in Adapt depends on your instructor. Courses are built from the material your institution uploads and are released to you by assignment. If your instructor never assigns anything, you have bought access to a class that is empty, and we would rather refund you than argue about whether that is our fault. Tell us.
Nothing in this Policy limits any refund, cancellation, or other right you have under applicable consumer-protection law, and nothing here is intended to displace a right you cannot lawfully be asked to give up. Where such a right conflicts with this Policy, that right governs.
